Social Program

All delegates and registered accompanying partners are welcome to attend a variety of social events. These will begin with a reception following the Opening Ceremony on 29 June and end with a Congress Banquet on Friday 4 July. Optional events will be organized on a number of nights, so that delegates will be able to sample the unique atmosphere of Hohhot. For example:

June 29, 2008 after the Opening Ceremony: During this banquet we will enjoy an array of wonderful food and drink.

June 30, 2008 evening: At the Mongolian Opera, we will watch a Mongolian dancing group perform their cultural dance and song. It is a wonderful performance, which depicts Mongolia’s unique ethnic history and culture in a charming spectacle of beautiful and poised stage movement. (Cost: $US20 per person)

July 3, 2008 evening: This banquet will feature the Grassland-lark Singing Competition. Many delegates will participate in this competition. The winner will receive a prize for his or her talent. This event will give us a chance to openly communicate and further strengthen our friendships.

Accompanying Partner Program

Inner Mongolian museum
The Inner Mongolian museum has more than 60,000 historical relics including more than 600 of the best-preserved articles, which were collected from the vast expanse of Mongolia. It is said that the historical relics housed in this museum are more than in any other place in China. They are divided into four groups: extinct plants and animals; historical relics; cultural relics; and revolutionary relics. Among them, the number of extinct plants and animals reveal Mongolia’s past environment, the process of its evolution, and the transitions of nature.
Route: After breakfast, we will leave for the museum. At the museum we will have the opportunity to learn about Mongolian culture and history. We will have the chance to observe the most comprehensive and inclusive dinosaur fossils in China. After the museum, we will visit the Five-Pagoda Lamasery by bus. Later in the day, we will visit the Mongolian Cultural Park and have lunch. We will have a first hand opportunity to experience a day in the life of a Mongol.
Cost: $US50 per person (one-day travel)

Dajao Temple and Tomb of Princess Zhaojun
Dajao, located in the old city of Hohhot, is called “yikejao”. In Mongolian it means “great temple”. It was built in the Ming Dynasty and it is the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery of the Yellow Sect (Gelugpa) in Hohhot as well as one of the few temples without a Living Buddha. Qing Emperor Kangxi once lived there and as a sign of respect to the Emperor, the ritual of reincarnation was discontinued. The temple of Dajao is an elegant construction: the hall is the common kind of lamasery, and the rest of the temple is built as a traditional Chinese temple. In the hall there is a silver statue of Buddha, thus the temple is called “temple of silver statue”. The cultural relics in Dajao provide a great opportunity to study the history of Mongolia. Overall, the three must-sees in Dajao are the silver Buddha, the dragon carving and the wall painting.
Located 9 kilometers to the south of Hohhot, the Tomb of Princess Zhaojun covers an area of 1.3 ha. The tomb is 33 meters high. It was said that each year when it turned cold and grasses became yellow, only this tomb remained green. So it was also called “Qingzhong” (Green Tomb). Wang Zhaojun, also named Wang Qiang, married Huhanye Chanyu, the emperor of Xiongnu, of her own free will during the reigning period of Emperor Yuan of the Han and Dynasty. She made great contributions to the relationship between Han and Xiongnu people, and in the following 40 years, no wars broke out and people of both countries lived a peaceful life.
Cost: $US50 per person one-day travel
