Five mid-congress tours [2 July 2008] will be available to choose from:
1. Experimental Demonstration Fields in Desert Steppe
Route: Hohhot – Experimental Station of Inner Mongolia Academy of Agricultural and Animal Husbandry Sciences – Gegentala – Hohhot

By bus, starting from Hohhot on 2 July, traveling 150 kilometer. It will take about two and a half hours to reach the Experiment Station of the Inner Mongolia Academy of Agricultural and Animal Husbandry Sciences. This is an experimental area of 2154 ha which includes natural grassland of 1976 ha, improved grasslands of 20 ha, and 133 ha of Agropyron mongolicum Keng seed production field. This tour will show technological advances and research results in the preservation of germplasm resources growing in dry environments in the north of China. The work covers more than 300 kinds of forage & grass types, the impact of global warming on the vegetation of Desert Steppe, seed production technology of Agropyron mongolicum Keng, and breeding and cultivation techniques of the shrub Ceratoides xerophyte.
We will visit pastoral people in the area, learning about the production and living status of these people and the effect of extension of science and technology. There will be local performances, such as horse racing, wrestling, archery and Mongolian folk and dance performance in Gegentala.

2. Forage Germplasm Evaluation and Reservation, Forage Seed Production and Farm Management
Route:Hohhot – Experimental Station of Grassland Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences – The Center of Dairy Cattle Breeding in western China – Mengniu Aoya International Farm – Mongolian Culture Park – Hohhot

By bus starting from Hohhot, it will take one hour to reach the Station of the Grassland Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. Visitors will take a tour to see the National Nursery of Perennial Forages, research on forage germplasm evaluation, research on forage breeding, forage seed and hay processing factory and forage greenhouse.
In the Center of Dairy Cattle Breeding in western China, the delegates will visit the frozen semen center, embryo transfer center, and dairy cattle breeding farm, the reproductive center of meat sheep and the demonstration area of high quality forge production. Delegates will see the advanced techniques of grass planting, cattle breeding and milk processing from around the world.
During the tour, visitors will experience the Mongolian Mores Garden, a horse racecourse, the Mongolian yurt of the Khan, Aobao, horse culture museum, the memorial site to Genghis Khan, Mongolian history, ancient military affairs, royal court, folk-custom and religions of Inner Mongolia.

3. Grassland Protection and Utilization in The Agro-pastoral Transitional Zone
Route: Hohhot – the Dryland Farming Experimental Station of the Inner Mongolia Academy of Agricultural and Animal Husbandry Sciences – Hademen Highland Pastures – Hohhot

By bus starting from Hohhot taking one hour to reach the Dryland Farming Experimental Station of the Inner Mongolia Academy of Agricultural and Animal Husbandry Sciences. This Experimental Station has a focus on wind erosion and desertification control using new technologies and models in the agro-pastoral transitional zone. The Experimental Station conducts research on pasture establishment and fertilizer models, critical water-saving models, and pilot demonstrations of grassland vegetation restoration.
In the afternoon, visitors will see the production and living status of people in the agro-pastoral transitional zone and Hademen Highland pastures. They will visit mountain meadows, the ancient city of Dalinhaer, and Hasidegao birch valley; and experience the life of nomadism in Nuominjila summer penning systems and the performance of Mongolian folk song and dance.

4. Demonstration of water and soil erosion control in dry land areas
Route: Hohhot – Water and Soil Conservation Ecological Surveillance Testing Center – Honger AoBao- Xilamuren grassland tourist site – Hohhot.
 
By bus starting from Hohhot, taking one hour to reach the Institute of Water and Soil Conservation with a total area of 150 hectares. It has automatic systems for monitoring wind erosion, water erosion, vegetation, and groundwater conditions. The Center demonstrates water-saving irrigation technologies, water ecological construction and development models in grassland. Delegates can talk with the pastoral people to learn about their production and living conditions.
In the afternoon, delegates will visit Xilamuren grassland tourist site and see a Lama Temple established in the Qing Dynasty. Xilamuren means “marvelous grassland ” in the Mongolian language. Visitors can enjoy the Sacrifice-offering ceremony to AoBao and eat the local food of Mongolian people. There will be local performances, such as horse racing, wrestling, archery and Mongolian folk song and dance.

5. Grassland education, rehabilitation and utilization of sand land
Route: Hohhot – Experiment Station of Inner Mongolia Agricultural University– Engebei Desert– Hohhot

The Experiment Station and laboratory of Inner Mongolia Agricultural University, centering on forage introduced cultivars’ evaluation, breeding program, new technologies application, germplasm nursing garden, and Chinese herbal medicines cultivation, etc.
Then, by bus starting to Engebei sand control centre covering 220 kilometers. It will take about three and a half hours to reach the Engebei desert demonstration area and Engebei sand control museum. Near the Yellow River, Engebei occupies 12,000 ha of desert and 8000 ha of grassland containing various tree species. There is a 670 ha reservoir with a natural mineral spring and singing sand ravine. Located here is the famous sand control ecosystem experience demonstration center. Visitors will see various techniques of desert management and experience the miracle of the desert changed into an oasis. Visitors will be able to appreciate the singing and dancing of Mongolian people.
